In an effort to protect our aquifers, conserve water resources, and control our peak hour water demand, the City of Dexter is continuing to enforce outdoor watering restrictions. Due to the dry conditions, water usage has increased significantly. Typical daily usage in the winter is between 250,000 and 350,000 gallons of water per day; this week usage has reached over 900,000 gallons. Optimal summer usage for the water system is around 700,000 gallons per day. If you are watering more than usual on your odd/even day, please make sure to read your water meter (or irrigation meter) before and after a few cycles so that you are aware of how much water is being used and are not surprised by the water bill you receive.
 
Outdoor water usage is restricted to odd/even days. Residents and businesses with odd numbered addresses (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) may do outdoor watering only on odd numbered dates. Likewise, those with even numbered addresses (2, 4, 6, 8, 0) may do outdoor watering only on even numbered dates. In addition, outdoor watering is prohibited between 6 am and 10 am. A simple adjustment of the start time of your irrigation system control can achieve this.
 
Thank you for your cooperation as we work to protect and conserve our water resources. The City Utility Department will be distributing reminder door hangers on homes that are not following the restrictions.

Work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 to reconstruct Hudson Street between Forest and Baker. During the construction, Hudson will be closed to thru traffic from Baker to Ann Arbor Street. Forest and Grand will also be closed at the Hudson intersection.

The Washtenaw  County Road Commission will be milling and resurfacing Island Lake Road between Dexter- Pinckney and Wylie on Thursday, July 6, 2017 and Friday, July 7, 2017.

**UPDATE - Do to the rain on July 7, 2017 the paving will be done on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.

On Thursday, July 6, 2017, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will begin mill and resurfacing work on Island Lake Road between Dexter-Pinckney Road and Wylie Road in Dexter Township. The road will not be closed to traffic, but the road will be under flag control and delays are possible.
                                   
The road work is expected to be complete by the end of the day on Friday, July 7, 2017. However, please be advised that due to weather conditions, all dates are tentative and subject to change.

The Washtenaw County Road Commission will be closing Baker Road from Shield to Marshall on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 to chip seal the roadway. The closure is expected to last until 3 pm. The schedule is weather dependent.

On Wednesday, July 5, 2017, the Washtenaw County Road Commission will close Baker Road between Marshall Rd and the Shield Road to complete chip seal operations.

WCRC expects to reopen the road by 3 pm on Wednesday, July 5. The road will be closed to through traffic during operations, but access for local traffic will be maintained.

With the Fourth of July approaching, we want to remind everyone that the use of fireworks in the City is prohibited by City Ordinance. State law however, requires that fireworks be permitted on the day before, the day of and the day following a national holiday. On these three days, State law permits fireworks to be used from 8 am to 1 am.   

State law does allow the City to regulate certain activities including the following:
- fireworks cannot be discharged in any public place, school property, church property or the property owned by another person without the other property owner's written permission.
- fireworks also cannot be discharged so that remnants from the fireworks land on any public place or the property of another person without the other property owners written permission.

Since the passage of this law in 2012, the City has received numerous complaints regarding the use of fireworks on the three days.  We are trying to encourage all residents to cooperate with their neighbors so that we minimize conflicts and complaints.   We would like to request that residents be respectful of their neighbors when using fireworks on the State approved days. If you are using fireworks and a neighbor asks you to stop or is concerned about debris or the proximity to their home, we expect our residents to be cooperative neighbors and honor the request.
 
All safety concerns related to fireworks activities should be directed to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. Please understand that the Sheriff’s Office personnel cannot supersede the State fireworks law, but they can discourage unsafe activity.   Most fireworks are loud, and noise is often the most common complaint that we receive.   The State fireworks law supersedes our noise ordinance within the permitted times of allowable use.   The City's goal is for all residents and property owners to have a safe and relaxing Fourth of July, so please be considerate of your neighbors. Work is starting today on an upgrade to the Meadowview/Dexter Ann Arbor traffic signal. New, more reliable, vehicle detection equipment will be installed and the technology is being upgraded so that multiple light timings will be possible based on time of day and/or the number of cars present. While the new detection equipment is being installed in the roadway, intermittent lane closures will be necessary. Please proceed cautiously through this area.

The City is seeking applications for temporary summer help. This position is in the Department of Public Works and will assist with mowing lawns as well as general maintenance. Work hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June through August/September (depending on availability). The Parks & Recreation Commission is seeking one new member. The Parks & Recreation Commission meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm and is a 7 member commission that is responsible for making recommendations to City Council on the planning and development of City parks.
 
The Tree Board is seeking one new member. The Tree Board assists in the development of a comprehensive tree management plan for the City of Dexter Michigan, including planning, tree planting, and maintenance programs for all public trees. The Board meets on an as needed basis. 

The Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee is seeking one new member. The Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and is a 11 member group that advises City Council on the development of arts, culture and heritage; promotes and publicizes projects that support arts, culture and heritage; serves as advocates for arts, culture, and heritage and encourages networking and collaborations of the arts, culture, and heritage of the City of Dexter.

The Planning Commission is seeking one new member.  The Planning Commission meets the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm and is a 9 member commission of City residents that is responsible for the creation and adoption of a master plan, which is a long range plan for the physical development of the City of Dexter.  The plan is reviewed and or revised every 5 years.  The Commission is also responsible for holding required public hearings on changes to the zoning ordinance and recommending the boundaries of zoning districts. The Commission also reviews site plans and annually reviews the Capital Improvements Plan which is a program to evaluate, prioritize and structure the financing of public improvement projects. 

The Zoning Board of Appeals is seeking two new members to serve as alternates on the Board.  The ZBA meets as needed on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm to decide on requests for variances from the Zoning Ordinance.

Applicants for all positions, with the exception of the Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee, must be City of Dexter residents.
