Tree  Board

The Tree Board works with the Community Development Manager to make recommendations regarding the City's tree programs.  They meet at the City Office on the third Tuesday of each month, on an as needed basis, with varying starting times.

City Street Tree Planting Program
The City of Dexter operates an annual street tree planting program.  Property owners in the City have the opportunity to have a new street tree planted in their lawn extension (i.e. the area generally between the sidewalk and road).  The cost to property owners is $150/tree, and the city covers the remaining cost.  Together these funds cover the purchase and installation of a 2-2 ½-inch caliper tree.  Each tree planted through the program comes with a one-year warranty.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2021 FALL PLANTING SEASON ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED - We have a limited supply of trees for the fall planting season.  Applications will be accepted on a first come first served basis.  Please contact the Office of Community Development (maniol@dextermi.gov or 734-580-2233) for more details or if you have any questions.

Tree City USA
The City of Dexter has been a proud Tree City USA member since 2008.  Tree City USA is a nationwide Arbor Day Foundation program that promotes proper tree care and management in urban areas and calls attention to the economic health and aesthetic benefits trees offer.  Trees are also beneficial because they are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and help beautify and give our community character.

Street Tree Trimming
The City of Dexter is responsible for trees generally within the road right-of-way.  In most cases, the right-of-way, also known as a lawn extension, is the area between the sidewalk and the curb line.  The Department of Public Works (DPW) provides maintenance to trees located within city road rights-of-way and on public property.   Tree maintenance occurs on an on-going basis and includes inspection, trimming and removal.  When an inspection reveals a tree is dead, dying or diseased, the tree is removed, and the location is noted, so that a new tree can be planted the following spring or fall.   Residents can request tree trimming by calling the Office of Community Development 734-580-2233.

Arbor Day 2021
Arbor Day 2021 - April 30, 2021

The City's Annual Arbor Day Celebration is be held annually to celebrate the benefits of trees, including how trees can reduce erosion of topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife.  Details coming soon regarding the Tree Board's Annual Free Seedling Giveaway.

In 2019, the City's Tree Board members and volunteers distributed nearly 350 free seedlings on Arbor Day.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seedling distribution was cancelled in 2020.
The City distributed 300 seedlings in 2021.
